Colorized version of the ronin drawing

Do you have a master?

In feudal Japan when a Samurai lost his master he was called a ronin. Ronin, in Japanese, is translated into “wave man”.

Are you a ronin or a Samurai? Do you follow someone with loyalty and virtue? Do you have no one to follow, but still live by a code of conduct similar to Bushido?

This is a drawing I did which is based on a drawing by the great Japanese swordsman Tessho.

Buddha Nature

What is Buddha Nature? We all have it. Is it similar to the inner Christ? For me, my Buddha Nature allows me to be a kind person, looking out for others. As a martial artist I think that it is important to keep this in top of mind.

A couple of years ago I was at a party and a friend told another person there that I was a martial artist. This other person asked if I could kick his ass, to which I replied: “I don’t know. Maybe, maybe not. But it does not matter at all to me. What does matter is that I know that if someone were to attack you or anyone else here I would be willing to give my life to protect you.” Is this Buddha Nature? To a Samurai or a Chinese warrior that lived wu de (martial morality) it would be.

What is your Buddha Nature?
